Frequently Asked Questions
Given my financial situation, should I choose an investment advisory service? Why or why not?
We partner with a diverse group of successful individuals, families, business owners, and non-profits to help define and meet their financial goals. Our investment strategies are best suited for clients with at least $500,000 of investable assets. We also provide comprehensive financial planning services for a fee. Our comprehensive planning services are available for individuals of any net worth level. Before working with you, we will discuss your individual financial situation to determine what service is the best fit for you.
How will you choose investments to recommend to me?
- When giving advice on your portfolio, we will ensure you understand our recommendations and are comfortable with the plan for your assets. This will involve:
- Reviewing your current allocation and the amount of risk you are currently taking with your portfolio.
- Determining the amount of risk you should be taking by discussing your retirement goals and using our risk analysis software, Riskalyze. Riskalyze is cutting-edge technology that identifies your acceptable levels of risk and reward. This will help guide our decision-making process.
- Designing a custom strategy that aligns with your personal preferences and priorities, allowing you to feel comfortable with your expected outcomes. The resulting proposed portfolio will include projections for the potential gains and losses you can expect over time. We will also consider the costs and tax implications of any strategy we recommend.
What is your relevant experience, including your licenses, education and other qualifications? What do these qualifications mean?
There are two CFP (Certified Financial Planner) professionals on our team, Robert Meyer and Hannah Depew, who also hold the California insurance license. Robert Meyer holds the CPWA (Certified Private Wealth Advisor) and CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) and has been in the investment advisory business since 1998. In addition, Chris Reyes is currently enrolled in the program to obtain his CFP.
Help me understand how these fees and costs might affect my investments. If I give you $10,000 to invest, how much will go to fees and costs, and how much will be invested for me?
We believe transparency is key to making the best decisions. As a result, we don’t receive any hidden fees or trails. For investment management, we charge a recurring asset-based fee. This incentivizes us not only to grow your assets, but also to protect them during bear markets. Your win is our win, and your loss is our loss. Fees are calculated as a percentage of assets under management, and the rate decreases as the asset level increases. Fees are not charged until we implement our investment strategy. After that, they are charged at the beginning of each calendar quarter. Our management fee rate varies depending on your investment mix and assets under our management. It’s also important to consider the total fee, which would include any expenses incurred by investments that the advisor selects for your portfolio; this is oftentimes referred to as the “expense ratio,” or “internal expense.” We believe in keeping these costs as low as possible. We will make sure you understand what these fees are before investing with us.
How might your conflicts of interest affect me, and how will you address them?
As a fiduciary, Truuwater Financial is obligated to act in your best interest. This is the highest standard of loyalty, trust, and care as established by law. Should a conflict of interest arise, we are dedicated to transparency. We will inform you of any potential conflicts, including any compensation we would receive should you choose a recommended investment or service.
As a financial professional, do you have any disciplinary history? For what type of conduct?
This is a great question to ask when evaluating a financial advisory team. No one on our team has any disciplinary history. This information is publicly available online through FINRA’s BrokerCheck site: https://brokercheck.finra.org/
Who is my primary contact person? Is he or she a representative of an investment adviser or a broker-dealer? Who can I talk to if I have concerns about how this person is treating me?
Different individuals on our team handle different aspects of our business. Jacob Rees is your first contact for any fund transfers or account administrative questions. Hannah Depew handles all financial planning questions, including retirement planning, insurance coverage, estate planning, and taxes. Janeen Kozak is responsible for scheduling meetings and office administration. Robert Meyer oversees portfolio allocation and ongoing management. All our registered team members (Robert, Hannah and Chris) are representatives of an investment adviser, Stratos Wealth Partners. We pride ourselves on our customer service and are always open to feedback on ways we can improve how we serve you. Should you have any concerns about our team, you can contact Charles Shapiro with Stratos Wealth Partners.
Why should I work with you?
We are passionate about excellent service. As a boutique wealth management firm, we keep a low client-to-advisor ratio to ensure you receive the personalized service you deserve. As an independent firm, we offer advice that is always in your best interest. Our comprehensive planning services examine your finances to give you confidence and control over your wealth and put you in a position to succeed. We believe in a low-cost investment management philosophy which enables you to keep more of what you earn. Another differentiator is our culture. We believe learning is a lifelong process, and this carries through to the quality of our advice and communication.
What is your investment philosophy?
Our goal is to leverage technology and academic research to create transparent, tax-efficient, low-cost, and easy-to-understand model portfolios that produce high risk-adjusted returns.
What do you specialize in?
We work with a diverse group of successful individuals, families, business owners, and non-profits looking to gain confidence, control, and clarity around their finances. We do this through investment portfolios and comprehensive financial planning specifically tailored to meet your individual needs and goals. Our investment offering includes portfolio allocation, solutions for concentrated stock, and alternative investments. In our financial planning, we look to provide peace of mind around every aspect of your wealth, such as retirement and Social Security, long-term care and aging living planning, life and disability insurance, property/casualty insurance, estate planning and charitable giving in line with your values, and education planning.
What other services do you provide?
Regardless of how successful someone is, we all have “blind spots” that could become pitfalls to living a stress-free life and interfere with our passions and goals. This is especially true of finances, which can be quite complex and time-consuming. As a result, in addition to our in-house expertise, we have a “virtual team” of trusted professionals who provide services such as care management, estate planning, property/casualty insurance, and asset protection. We help coordinate this team to make sure your entire financial picture is working effectively.
How do you gather data for my financial plan?
We follow a comprehensive process that reviews all your existing investment accounts, insurance policies, estate planning documents, tax returns, Social Security reports, and more to gain a deep understanding of your situation. Moreover, we dialogue around your values, concerns, and desires to help clarify your goals and ensure your plan is custom-designed with you in mind.
What specific technology, software, and data gathering tools do you use?
We use some of the leading financial software in our industry. We use Riskalyze for risk analysis and tolerance testing; Morningstar for portfolio construction, investment data, and analytics; Orion for performance reporting; and Refinitiv for live exchange data. We have several sources of proprietary investment research, including Ned Davis Research, Louise Yamada Advisors, and Goldman Sachs. We use eMoney Advisor, which provides both robust financial planning as well as a secure online portal for tracking your assets and storing important documents. We believe our research and technology represent some of the best the industry has to offer.
What is the average turnaround time for client questions and requests?
We know how important it is to receive information in a timely manner, so we respond as soon as possible. During business hours you can expect us to reply the same day, typically within a couple of hours, if not immediately. If the request will take longer to complete, we will notify you within this same period.
How do you educate your clients?
We offer a variety of educational resources. We have a blog that is updated regularly and two weekly emails with brief updates on financial trends. Each quarter you can expect detailed market commentary and updates on our strategies. We also offer in-person seminars and online webinars on timely topics.
